Este número no varía según la creencia Shía o de la Ehl-i sünnet. Sin embargo, hay diferentes interpretaciones en cuanto al duodécimo imam. El duodécimo imam es Muhammed Mehdi, hijo de Imam Hasan el-Askerî, quien nació en el año 255 de la hégira y desapareció en su infancia. Él reaparecerá en el futuro como el Mahdi.
“Hz. Mehdi no es el niño perdido, sino una persona llamada Muhammed Mehdi que nacerá y se revelará en el fin de los tiempos.”
